Pristine beaches and springs aren’t just what Camiguin is known for. The people themselves are very talented with their hands and here my friends are wonderful creations made from sea glass by the women of Agoho. They looked so much like raw crystals but bet they’re actually glass shards that have been weathered by the sea. It actually takes several decades for these to form just to get the texture and shape that they are now. If you think about it, you could say they’re relics from another generation. We will now head to Treasures Camiguin
Don’t you just love how it looks when it catches the light? You can find handicrafts here made mainly from these local treasures such as wind chimes, kitchen utensils, home decors, textiles, other knick-knacks and jewelry.
The shop may actually have been an ancestral house in the past. As you can see it is quite spacious with a mix of early colonial and island vibe going on. The people there were accommodating and answered our questions with gusto.
Treasures Camiguin is actually a drop-off point for products made by an NGO organization called Komunidad Sa Baibai whose aim is to contribute to the health and wellbeing of the Camiguinions. They wanted this to become a means of livelihood for the locals. One of the owners, Cocoy Bajuyo himself gave us a tour around the place.
Cocoy gave lessons on sea glass and the many possibilities you can do with them. We were told it was actually kids who pick them up during their spare time. They then sell their sea glass to Komunidad Sa Baibai to turn into wonderful creations.
Bamboo lamps and jewelry being displayed as their featured products during our visit (top left). Sea glass marbles (top right) could become a rare sight in the future since you won’t see kids playing with marbles these days. They also featured a variety of sea glass and pottery (photo below). We also learned that the rarest types were orange, red and yellow in color.
From Trash To Treasure
Treasures Camiguin features artists and their crafts as well. As you can see, they live up to their motto and have used recycled plastic as a medium for their art. This project has put trash on another light and another purpose. Paintings found there had sea glass and pottery incorporated into them. You can also dabble in their jewelry making by making your own piece.
Wire wrapped pieces fascinate me seeing as I have yet to master this craft. It looks so simple yet intricate. I wasn’t able to take nicely lit shots of the pieces set in silver but you can view more of their products on their facebook page.
Location
Treasures Camiguin is located just along the highway at Barangay Bug-ong. Don’t forget to stop by this place if you’re ever on the island for some souvenirs. Its hard to miss the only lavender colored house turned to shop.
