We had to catch it before the sun rose, waiting patiently as the boatmen readied the bangka to be used on our journey to that enigmatic white island. This was my second time to go there and this place has the best view of Camiguin. Think about it, viewing an island from an island.

We rented boats at 800PHP which accommodated six of us. It was a ten minute trip of excitement and sleepiness but when the sun began to peak beyond the deep blue waters, now it was a sight to behold. The winds were very pleasant while the splashes of seawater brought us to a waking wide-eyed state. This is exactly one of those moments that an omnipotent being is always at work every single day. I was mesmerized to the point that I forgot I was in a boat for a second. Isn’t that just an amazing sight? Now don’t forget that you aren’t the only person visiting this powdery white beach. I also want to remind that there are other tourists as well so the place can be slightly crowded. No matter, you’ll always have your own space. Don’t forget to slather on some sunscreen since there is barely any shade unless you brought your own umbrella. I also got to snack on sea urchins! As the Japanese call it, UNI! Fresh seafood is always a delight and these were not an exception.

URCHINS

How I wish I brought some rice with me. We got it from a man walking around with a basket at 3 for 50PHP only. He gladly prepared them for us by cracking them open, taking out the inedible stuff and we were left with the golden eggs of seafood delight. I can only describe the flavor as a mixture of all flavors, umami! You could taste the essence of the sea with an underlying hint of sweet. He then put on a dash of local vinegar to complete the taste. I ate as much as I could just to make myself remember this moment. But I was careful not to eat TOO MUCH since there could be a possibility that it may disagree with my stomach and I am not taking that chance. How can something so scary take you to places with its flavors? Truly a deception to the eyes and taste buds.

This may probably the only photo of myself that looked decent. But it’s good enough and as you can see, it’s got the best view of the island born of fire!
